Chic and What Disco Left Behind

Beyond their own band, Chic’s Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wrote and produced entire albums for other singers: Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” in 1979 and Diana Ross’ “Diana” in 1980. On the Sister Sledge songs, too, Rodgers plays the guitar and Edwards the bass.

Chic’s “Good Times” went to No. 1 in the US in August 1979. Bernard Edwards’ bass keeps bouncing while Nile Rodgers’ guitar chops in short strokes above it. The same year, the pair wrote “He’s the Greatest Dancer” for Sister Sledge. “I’m Coming Out”, which they wrote for Diana Ross, came to Rodgers after he saw several people dressed as Diana Ross at a club in New York.

Most of the earliest rap records sat on top of disco backing tracks. Rodgers was angry at first when the Sugarhill Gang used “Good Times”, but he later called it his favorite of all the songs built on Chic. When Chic played “Good Times” live, they started working in a rap passage and trading lines with the crowd. Under Funky 4 + 1’s “That’s the Joint” is another disco record, A Taste of Honey’s “Rescue Me”.

題名曲「Paid in Full」の低音は、デニス・エドワーズの R&B のヒット「Don't Look Any Further」から借りた。

After the disco era ended, the club records that followed it kept playing under rap. Beneath Eric B. & Rakim’s first single, “Eric B. Is President”, runs the bassline of a club track Fonda Rae released in 1982. Their own songs were played in those clubs too, and “Move the Crowd” climbed to No. 3 on the chart of club plays. The low end of the title track, “Paid in Full”, was borrowed from Dennis Edwards’ R&B hit “Don’t Look Any Further”.

“Life After Death”, the album released after the Notorious B.I.G.’s death, is full of hits from the disco years. “Mo Money Mo Problems” is built on “I’m Coming Out”, the song the Chic pair wrote for Diana Ross. Herb Alpert’s “Rise”, an instrumental hit from 1979, turns as a loop on “Hypnotize”. On “I Love the Dough”, with Jay-Z, Biggie used a 1978 hit that Rod Stewart made in a disco style.

On “Keep the Faith” in 1998, Faith Evans sang both of her first two singles over dance records from the disco years. The bass and rhythm of Chic’s “Chic Cheer” loop under “Love Like This”, and “All Night Long” uses a 1980 track by Unlimited Touch. Four years earlier, Mary J. Blige’s “Mary Jane (All Night Long)” had been built on a 1983 dance hit produced by Rick James.

Compton’s the Game laid his life story over the strings of the Trammps, a Philadelphia disco band, on “Hate It or Love It” in 2005. West Coast rap had been building on disco-era records for more than ten years by then. The loose groove of Snoop Doggy Dogg’s “Gin and Juice” comes from George McCrae, who sang one of disco’s first hits, “Rock Your Baby”. A song by the disco singer Linda Clifford turns underneath 2Pac’s “All Eyez on Me”.

Will Smith’s 1997 album “Big Willie Style” turned records from disco and just after into one pop rap hit after another. Sister Sledge’s “He’s the Greatest Dancer” lists brands like Halston and Gucci in its lyrics, and Nile Rodgers has said it may have been the first time brand names appeared in a song. Nearly twenty years on, Will Smith rapped over it about dressing up and dancing on “Gettin’ Jiggy wit It”.
