Gil's Last Voice

In 2010 Gil Scott-Heron released “I’m New Here”, his first album in 16 years. Its producer, Richard Russell of XL Recordings, took his model from the first album by the British band the xx, with its heavy bass and spare sound.

On his first album in 1970, Gil Scott-Heron recited poems over congas and bongos. A year later, on “Home Is Where the Hatred Is”, he sang rather than spoke about a home where someone is lost to drugs. Forty years on, “I’m New Here” opens with a poem for the grandmother who raised him in Tennessee. Over piano and a string loop taken from Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights”, Gil argues back against anyone who would call a childhood among women a broken home.

The producer Richard Russell asked Jamie xx of the xx whether he wanted to remake all of “I’m New Here”. Jamie, who had grown up hearing Gil through his parents, rebuilt it on a laptop between tours, keeping only Gil’s voice. On “We’re New Here” in 2011, the poet’s words were set again over the low end of dubstep and UK garage.

Pop Rap

Kanye West used Gil Scott-Heron’s recordings more than once and closed his 2010 album with Gil’s poem about the isolation of a Black man with no place in America. In 2011 one of the Jamie xx tracks became the base of “Take Care”, a hit for Toronto’s Drake. Gil had died that May.
