Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “Riot in Lagos” comes from “B-2 Unit”, his 1980 solo album. It was one of the first albums to use the Roland TR-808, and this track is said to have carried that sound into the clubs. Two years earlier, YMO’s debut album had opened with “Computer Game”, built on video-game sounds, and placed “Firecracker” second. Kurtis Mantronik picked both “Computer Game” and “Riot in Lagos” for a compilation of the records that shaped him.

Tokyo’s electronic sound reached Bronx parties. YMO’s “Firecracker”, a synth remake of a Martin Denny exotica melody, caught on in the Bronx, and Afrika Bambaataa worked it into one of his mixes. “Planet Rock”, too, is said to carry ideas taken from YMO. In Brooklyn, Whodini made their first single, “Magic’s Wand”, with help from the British synth-pop artist Thomas Dolby.

Hearing Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “Riot in Lagos” on the radio turned Kurtis Mantronik toward electronic music. Born in Jamaica, he moved by way of Canada to Brooklyn, and later formed Mantronix with MC Tee. Their records had no James Brown samples. It was hip-hop built only from electronic drums, synthesizers and synth bass.

In 2001 two singers went after the same loop from YMO’s “Firecracker”. Mariah Carey had secured permission first, for “Loverboy”, but the loop ended up on Jennifer Lopez’s “I’m Real”. Mariah rebuilt her song on Cameo’s “Candy” instead, and her remix included a passage of Da Brat singing over the “Firecracker” melody. The original “Firecracker” version of “Loverboy” finally came out 19 years later, in 2020.
