Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo met at a summer camp for gifted students in Virginia Beach. In 1991 they entered a local talent contest and were discovered by Teddy Riley, whose studio was close to Pharrell’s school, and the next year they formed the Neptunes.

Kelis grew up in Harlem, and her debut album was produced from start to finish by the Neptunes. The track under her first single, “Caught Out There”, had already been turned down by Busta Rhymes, and over it she screams “I hate you so much right now!” The rapper on “Good Stuff” is Terrar, who would later go by Pusha T in Clipse. Four years on, “Milkshake” has no drum machine at all: a single darbuka carries the rhythm.

The Neptunes made their name on records by New York rappers. The “what what” in Noreaga’s “Superthug” was a placeholder until he had a chorus, but Pharrell liked it and kept it. On Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Got Your Money”, the hook is sung by Kelis, a month before her own first single came out. On Jay-Z’s “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)”, Pharrell himself sings on the chorus, lifted from a Rick James song, without a credit.

On the songs Snoop Dogg made with the Neptunes, Pharrell often steps up to the mic himself. He sings alongside Charlie Wilson on “Beautiful”. “Drop It Like It’s Hot” gives him the first verse, over little more than tongue clicks and keyboards on a drum machine, and it became the first No. 1 single for both of them. Under “Let’s Get Blown” runs Slave’s “Watching You”, the same record behind “Gin and Juice”.
