The English port city of Bristol had a party culture built around huge speakers, brought by people who had come from Jamaica. Future members of Massive Attack played records there.

ダブは、ミキサーを楽器のように弾く音楽だ。オーガスタス・パブロの「King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown」では、キング・タビーがジェイコブ・ミラーの歌を抜き、ドラムやギターを消しては戻して、こだまの中に組み直す。リー・ペリーのバンド、アップセッターズの『Blackboard Jungle Dub』は最初のステレオのダブで、ジュニア・マーヴィンの高いファルセットも、ペリーの自宅のスタジオで録られた。ブリストルのサウンドシステムが受け継いだのは、この低音と残響の鳴らし方だった。
Dub is music played on the mixing desk as if it were an instrument. On Augustus Pablo’s “King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown”, King Tubby pulls out Jacob Miller’s vocal and drops the drums and guitar out and back in, rebuilding the track inside the echo; Pablo’s melodica carries the tune on “Java”. “Blackboard Jungle Dub” by Lee Perry’s band the Upsetters comes from what is considered the first stereo dub album, and Junior Murvin’s high falsetto on “Police and Thieves” was recorded at Perry’s home studio. Bristol’s sound systems inherited this way of handling bass and echo.

In Bristol, new sounds went on top of the dub bass, and all of them sink slowly into the reverb. Massive Attack, who came out of the Wild Bunch sound system, defined how this music would sound. Their first single, “Daydreaming”, pairs Shara Nelson’s singing with a young Tricky, and “Unfinished Sympathy” carries big strings recorded at Abbey Road. On “Karmacoma”, 3D and Tricky trade low, whispered lines, and “Teardrop” sets Elizabeth Fraser’s voice over a beat like a heartbeat.
