The Dark Shelf
The Dark Shelf
Bristol’s producers dug through the same record shelves as hip-hop but picked the darker, slower rows. That meant spy-film music, jazz-funk and unhurried soul.
Jazz
Where hip-hop producers went looking for dance breaks, Bristol’s producers reached for a few tense bars. Portishead sped up “Danube Incident”, which Lalo Schifrin wrote for the TV series “Mission: Impossible”, into a loop, and cut up “Elegant People”, a Wayne Shorter tune recorded by Weather Report. Massive Attack borrowed drummer Billy Cobham’s jazz-funk track “Stratus”, bass and drums included.
Soul
Some early-1970s soul is in no hurry at all. On Isaac Hayes’ records, like “Ike’s Rap II” from “Black Moses”, the strings and rhythm repeat the same shape so many times that any stretch you cut out is already a loop. Massive Attack kept coming back to this shelf. On their first album they covered William DeVaughn’s “Be Thankful For What You Got”, and seven years later, on “Mezzanine”, they used Hayes’ “Our Day Will Come”.
Reggae / Dub
Horace Andy, from Jamaica, is a roots reggae singer known for his distinctive voice. His signature song “Skylarking” caught on in the sound systems first, then came out as a single and went to No. 1 in Jamaica. From 1990 on he sang on every Massive Attack album, and on “Mezzanine” he remade “You Are My Angel”, a song of his from more than 20 years before, and sang “Man Next Door”, which John Holt wrote and first sang with the Paragons.
Trip-Hop
Loops pulled from old records got slow beats and new voices in Bristol. On “Safe from Harm”, the opening track of “Blue Lines”, Massive Attack had Shara Nelson sing over the bass and drums of Billy Cobham’s “Stratus”, and the original stays plainly audible even as it becomes another song. Portishead’s “Sour Times” sets Beth Gibbons’ voice over Schifrin sped up and raised nearly a semitone. “Ike’s Rap II” turns underneath both “Glory Box”, the closing track of Portishead’s Mercury Prize-winning “Dummy”, and Tricky’s “Hell Is Round the Corner”, where he murmurs low over the same loop.
