The Kid from Carol City
The rapper who became SpaceGhostPurrp grew up in Carol City, Miami. He started rapping at five and making beats at 13, and in 2008, still a teenager, he formed Raider Klan with his friends.
Memphis Rap
SpaceGhostPurrp took his lead from Memphis tapes of the 1990s. The young crowd who made those tapes had grown up on DJ Spanish Fly, who was making and handing out his own cassettes from the 1980s on. One of them, Juicy J of Three 6 Mafia, trusted the 20-year-old SpaceGhostPurrp with several tracks on his 2011 mixtape “Blue Dream & Lean”.
Chopped and Screwed
SpaceGhostPurrp learned from the tapes of Houston’s DJ Screw, who slowed songs down. Screw dropped the tempo until the voices sank, and chopped and screwed is counted among the forerunners of phonk. He even slowed down records from Memphis. Young local rappers freestyled on his tapes, and Big Moe, who rapped in a half-sung style, came up through them.
Phonk
In 2010 SpaceGhostPurrp opened a YouTube channel and began posting tracks he had slowed and chopped himself, set to footage that looked like old “Soul Train” episodes. Two years later he named his first album, released on the British label 4AD, “Mysterious Phonk”. The word later stretched to cover drift phonk, the fast style born in Russia. Its biggest hit, “Murder In My Mind”, was made by Kordhell from Birmingham, England.
