バージニア州リッチモンドのノイズとパンクの場にいたトラヴィス・ミラーは、2010年からリル・アグリー・メインの名でラップを録り、メンフィスの音をよみがえらせて、のちのフォンクにつないだ。最初のアルバム『Mista Thug Isolation』では、ビートを自分で作り、ファンクやソウルのレコードも使っている。
Travis Miller came out of the noise and punk circles of Richmond, Virginia. From 2010 he recorded rap as Lil Ugly Mane, bringing back the Memphis sound that later became phonk. On his first album, “Mista Thug Isolation”, he made the beats himself and worked funk and soul records into them.

リル・アグリー・メインは「Alone and Suffering」に、ジェームス・ブラウンの「Funky President (People It's Bad)」を使った。デンゼル・カリーと組んだ「Twistin'」の元ネタは、フィラデルフィアのデクスター・ワンセルの「A Prophet Named K.G.」で、宇宙ファンクのアルバム『Life on Mars』に入っている。同じアルバムの「Theme from the Planets」の出だしのドラムは、ヒップホップの最初期の土台のビートに数えられる。
Lil Ugly Mane used James Brown’s “Funky President (People It’s Bad)” on “Alone and Suffering”. “Twistin’”, his track with Denzel Curry, draws on “A Prophet Named K.G.” by Philadelphia’s Dexter Wansel, from his space-funk album “Life on Mars”. The drum intro of “Theme from the Planets”, from the same album, is counted among the first foundation beats of hip-hop.

リオン・ウェアが1979年に出した「Small Cafe」は、リル・アグリー・メインの「Throw Dem Gunz」の元ネタになった。デトロイト生まれのウェアは、おもに裏方として、ほかの歌い手の曲を書いた。彼のデモで「I Want You」を聴いたモータウンのベリー・ゴーディは、マーヴィン・ゲイに合う曲だと考えた。「Radiation (Lung Pollution)」に使ったジェイムス・イングラムの「Love's Been Here and Gone」も、ウェアが一緒に書いている。
Leon Ware’s “Small Cafe”, released in 1979, is the record underneath Lil Ugly Mane’s “Throw Dem Gunz”. Ware, who was born in Detroit, did most of his work behind the scenes, writing songs for other singers. When Motown’s Berry Gordy heard Ware’s demo of “I Want You”, he decided it belonged with Marvin Gaye. Ware also co-wrote James Ingram’s “Love’s Been Here and Gone”, which Lil Ugly Mane used on “Radiation (Lung Pollution)”.

2013年8月、リル・アグリー・メインは、壊れたパソコンから取り出した未発表の曲とインストを『Three Sided Tape』にまとめた。曲目には、「Radiation」に「二つ目の版」、「Slack In My Mack」に「最初の版」と書き添えてあり、どちらも『Mista Thug Isolation』に同じ名前の曲がある。「Steelspittin」は、MP3 のコーデックのエラー入り、と題に書き添えて出している。
In August 2013 Lil Ugly Mane put out “Three Sided Tape”, a set of unreleased songs and instrumentals recovered from his broken computer. The track list marks “Radiation” as a second version and “Slack In My Mack” as a first version, and both share their names with songs on “Mista Thug Isolation”. He released “Steelspittin” with a note in its title that the MP3 codec error was included.
