Sped-Up Voices

Take an old soul vocal, speed it up until the voice goes high, and put it at the center of the beat. The method, later named chipmunk soul after the cartoon chipmunks, changed how soul records were used, from loops to voices.

ボビー・"ブルー"・ブランドの「Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City」は恋の歌だが、街の貧しさを嘆く歌としても聴かれてきた。 Z「Heart of the City」の土台にする。

The voices Kanye West chose for his beats all came from songs first sung slowly. Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City” is a love song, yet it has also been heard as a lament for a poor city, and Kanye made it the foundation of Jay-Z’s “Heart of the City” in 2001. In 2003 he sped up ballads by Luther Vandross and Chaka Khan, raising their pitch, and placed them under Twista’s “Slow Jamz” and his own first single, “Through the Wire”.

Before anyone knew Kanye’s name, Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA was already putting soul singers at the center of his beats. On “Tearz” Wendy Rene’s voice repeats, and Gladys Knight & the Pips sing under “Can It Be All So Simple”. On “Wu-Tang Forever” in 1997, his way of chopping soul, speeding it up and letting it ring high took clear shape, and “Little Ghetto Boys” draws on a Donny Hathaway song.

Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint”, released in 2001, turned sped-up soul vocals into the sound of a whole album. Its producers were the still-young Kanye West and Just Blaze. Old soul voices run through most of its tracks, and the album quickly made both of them well-known producers. Just Blaze also set Rose Royce’s singing at the center of the beat on Cam’ron’s “Oh Boy”.

With “The College Dropout”, his first album, in 2004, Kanye West stepped out front with his own voice. On Twista’s “Slow Jamz” he did more than make the beat, adding his voice alongside Jamie Foxx. The sped-up vocal spread with this album, together with the name chipmunk soul, and came to be known as Kanye’s own sound.
