Soul from the 1960s and 70s found its way into every corner of hip-hop. Isaac Hayes’ strings, the opening of a Jackson 5 song and lines sung by Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin all became material for beats.

Soul

Isaac Hayes took “Walk On By”, a short song by Bacharach, and rebuilt it as a long track with strings that spread wide. The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” opens on a short phrase of piano and guitar. “O-o-h Child” by the Five Stairsteps, a family group from Chicago, was placed on a B-side and caught on before the A-side did. All three would later play under songs by the Notorious B.I.G., Kris Kross and 2Pac.

Golden Age

In late-1980s New York, the Juice Crew cut more than drums from soul records, taking horns and sung lines as well. On Marley Marl’s “The Symphony”, the crew passes the mic over an Otis Redding song. Big Daddy Kane took both the bass and a sung line from the Emotions. Sometimes a line from the original stood in for the chorus, and on “Just a Friend” Biz Markie went as far as singing it again in his own off-key voice.

Gangsta Rap

N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton” names its city over Wilson Pickett’s charging guitar. The Geto Boys confessed the paranoia of sleepless nights over a quiet Isaac Hayes riff. On his third solo album, Ice Cube laid a loop of Isley Brothers guitar and bass underneath and talked through a day when nothing went wrong. He wrote it thinking that, for all the gangsta stories he had rapped, there must have been good days too.

Pop Rap

に、「I Want You Back」がクリス・クロスの「Jump」に使われている。

Soul hits everyone knew went straight into pop rap hits. Motown’s Jackson 5 supplied “ABC” to Naughty by Nature’s “O.P.P.” and “I Want You Back” to Kris Kross’ “Jump”. The horns at the top of House of Pain’s “Jump Around” come from a Bob & Earl record. Coolio replayed a Stevie Wonder song as the frame of “Gangsta’s Paradise”.

Hardcore Hip-Hop

クイーンズのモブ・ディープは、アル・グリーンの「I Wish You Were Here」を、ナズとレイクォンを迎えた「Eye for a Eye」の下に敷いた。

A sweet soul phrase can turn cold depending on how it repeats. Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA kept the opening of a Charmels song, produced by Isaac Hayes, circling under the talk of money and poverty on “C.R.E.A.M.”. He used the same Charmels song again for “I Gotcha Back” on GZA’s “Liquid Swords”. Mobb Deep from Queens laid Al Green’s “I Wish You Were Here” under “Eye for a Eye”, with Nas and Raekwon as guests.

What 2Pac took from soul was melody more than drums. The chorus of “Keep Ya Head Up” sings the tune of the Five Stairsteps’ “O-o-h Child”. Stevie Wonder’s harmonica plays on “So Many Tears”. “Dear Mama” carries a reworked line from “Sadie”, which the Spinners sang in 1975.

On “Warning”, the Notorious B.I.G. tells of a night when someone is coming for his life, over the strings of Isaac Hayes’ version of “Walk On By”. Fifteen years later, Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” sings the praises of the city itself over the Moments’ piano and vocals. Two years after that, on “Otis”, Jay-Z and Kanye West traded verses over a beat built around Otis Redding’s shouts and horns.

Mos Def and Talib Kweli, who worked together in Brooklyn as Black Star, each built a song on a woman’s voice. On Talib Kweli’s “Get By”, the piano and voice of Nina Simone’s “Sinnerman” repeat to the very end. Mos Def chose Aretha Franklin. For “The Light”, Detroit’s Jay Dee set Bobby Caldwell’s singing under the rap of Chicago’s Common.

Memphis Rap

Three 6 Mafia from Memphis kept going back to the records of Willie Hutch, who sang for Motown in the 1970s. “Stay Fly” puts Hutch’s lament for a love gone cold over a slow, dark beat. “Poppin’ My Collar”, from the same album, sits on Hutch’s music for the film “The Mack”. Three years earlier, DJ Paul and Juicy J had laid Hutch’s “I Choose You” under “Choose U” by Juicy J’s brother, Project Pat.
