George Clinton Drops In
Alongside James Brown, Parliament and Funkadelic were the records rap producers sampled most. In 1996 their leader, George Clinton, told them to go ahead and sample, since money coming in at his age was no bad thing. Then he started showing up on rap records himself.
Funk
1975年のパーラメント「Give Up the Funk」は、「We want the funk」の合唱で客を巻き込む。
Parliament’s “Give Up the Funk” from 1975 pulls the crowd in with its chant of “We want the funk”. Two years later, on “Flash Light”, Bernie Worrell played the bass on a Minimoog and moved funk’s low end onto a synthesizer. In 1978, with his other band, Funkadelic, Clinton turned dancing together as one into a chorus on “One Nation Under a Groove”.
Old School
The first rap record George Clinton sang on was “Magilla Gorilla”, from Kurtis Blow’s 1986 album “Kingdom Blow”. Blow had been the first rapper signed to a major label, Mercury, in 1979, and this album brought in guests from outside rap. Bob Dylan raps on “Street Rock”, his part cut in one take at his home in Malibu. The single “I’m Chillin’” features Robert Reed of Trouble Funk, a go-go band from Washington.
West Coast
Oakland’s Digital Underground built their songs on Parliament records and eventually named an album after themselves as sons of P-Funk, and Clinton himself turned up on its title track. Ice Cube’s “Bop Gun” stands on “One Nation”, with Clinton in both the song and the video. 2Pac called him in for “Can’t C Me”, and Dr. Dre lent a hand.
Southern Hip-Hop
Parliament used synth bass to stretch funk all the way into stories about outer space. On “ATLiens” in 1996, Atlanta’s OutKast took Clinton’s space music as their model and made it far more relaxed; the title joins Atlanta and aliens. Echoes and a dub-like bass drift through “Elevators (Me & You)”, the first single the duo produced themselves. Two years later they invited Clinton himself onto a song called “Synthesizer”.
Alternative Hip-Hop
Oakland’s Souls of Mischief debuted on the major label Jive in 1993 with “93 ‘Til Infinity” and were dropped two years later. Del, from the same Hieroglyphics crew, lost his deal with Elektra after the hit “Mistadobalina”. They started a label of their own, and on “Mama Knows Best”, from the Souls of Mischief album it released in 2000, Clinton sings too.

New Jersey’s Redman brought Clinton in as a guest on “J.U.M.P.” from “Malpractice”, and on the same album played Clinton’s 1982 “Atomic Dog” on “Doggz II”. Wu-Tang Clan welcomed him on “Wolves”, from their first album in six years and the first the whole group made after Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s death.

“To Pimp a Butterfly”, Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 album, opens with “Wesley’s Theory”, and George Clinton is on it, 29 years after the Kurtis Blow session. The album takes in a great deal of funk alongside jazz and soul, and “King Kunta” quotes James Brown’s “The Payback”. On “i”, released ahead of the album, the Isley Brothers’ “That Lady” plays.
