Where Funk Records Went
A few seconds of James Brown’s band, a Parliament chant, the talk box of Ohio’s Zapp: all of them have been used in hip-hop again and again. Depending on which part is cut and how it is played, the same funk becomes the base for completely different songs.
Funk
James Brown’s “Cold Sweat” from 1967 is held to be the first true funk song, and partway through it the other instruments stop and leave the drums on their own. “Funky Drummer” from 1970 ends with Clyde Stubblefield’s eight solo bars. Bobby Byrd, a singer in Brown’s revue, sang “I Know You Got Soul” over the sound of the same band.
Golden Age
In New York in 1987 and 1988, the records dug for most were the ones around James Brown. Eric B. & Rakim took the drums and the shout from Bobby Byrd’s “I Know You Got Soul” and kept the title too. Public Enemy took the shrieking sax of “Rebel Without a Pause” from the J.B.’s and set “Fight the Power” on the “Funky Drummer” break. On EPMD’s “You Gots to Chill”, the talk box of Ohio’s Zapp plays as well.
Alternative Hip-Hop
De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest handled funk lightly, almost playfully. What comes forward on De La Soul’s “Me Myself and I” is not heavy drums but a bright Funkadelic synth. Tribe’s “Check the Rhime” lets the guitar and horns of Average White Band ring out easily. De La Soul’s “Potholes in My Lawn” even brought along the yodel and jaw harp from a 1970 Parliament song.
West Coast
On West Coast records, horns, talk box and bass come forward more than drums. N.W.A’s “Express Yourself” borrowed the horns and rhythm of a song with the same title by a band named after Watts. 2Pac’s “I Get Around” takes Roger Troutman’s talk box from Zapp & Roger’s “Computer Love”. Coolio’s “Fantastic Voyage” goes further, with its title, chorus and bass all coming from Lakeside’s song of the same name.
G-Funk
ドクター・ドレーの「Let Me Ride」のサビはパーラメントの一節で、スヌープの最初のシングル「Who Am I (What's My Name)?」
G-funk borrowed Parliament and Clinton more openly than anything else, and the original chants and basslines are easy to pick out. The chorus of Dr. Dre’s “Let Me Ride” is a Parliament line, and Snoop Doggy Dogg’s first single, “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?”, carries the “Bow wow wow” of “Atomic Dog”. On “Dre Day”, which the two made together, the bass of Funkadelic’s “(Not Just) Knee Deep” is replayed at a slower tempo.
Pop Rap
Pop rap borrowed the riffs from funk hits that had stuck in everyone’s ear. Even people who never listened to rap already knew those few seconds. On DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince’s “Summertime”, the melody of Kool & the Gang’s “Summer Madness” plays on synth. From MC Hammer to Nelly, the approach held for more than ten years.
East Coast
Funk records could be pulled toward very different moods depending on the song. In 1990s New York, Nas set the Gap Band’s guitar and bass under a quiet look back. Bad Boy’s Mase used Kool & the Gang’s bass for a bright, bouncing party track. On the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy”, a dream come true is told over the sweet synths of Mtume, a funk and soul group.
