Cowboys and Rap
Country singers were talking their way through songs as early as the 1960s. Among the records named as forerunners of country rap are some by Black musicians who drew on Westerns and rural life.

Parliament’s first album in 1970 has George Clinton’s band singing about a little country boy, pedal steel guitar and all, a track sometimes counted among country rap’s forerunners. War wrote the two heroes of a 1950s TV Western into “The Cisco Kid” and took it to No. 2 in the US. Born in Cochran, Georgia, Blowfly made a habit of turning country radio hits into filthy parodies, and on “Blowfly’s Rap” in 1980 he built his rhymes on the talking country songs of Charlie Daniels and others.
Reggae / Dub
Jamaican ska in the 1960s was full of the language of Westerns, and the Kingston singer Prince Buster called one of his records “Texas Hold-Up”. By the reggae years, Lee Perry’s Upsetters had borrowed the name of the 1966 spaghetti western “Django” for “Return of Django”, which reached No. 5 in the UK in 1969. The Upsetters even have a song and an album named after Clint Eastwood.
Southern Hip-Hop
Southern rappers were the first to say “country rap” out loud. In the 1990s, rappers up North dismissed Southern rap as not real hip-hop, and at the end of one song Pimp C of UGK, from Port Arthur, Texas, shot back that this was no hip-hop record but a country rap tune. Nappy Roots took on poor rural life head-on, singing it with the R&B singer Anthony Hamilton.
Country Rap
Country rap as a genre started small. In Georgia, Bubba Sparxxx and the producer Shannon Houchins put out an album mixing country and trap on their own, and Houchins later started a label with Colt Ford. Country singers soon began making room for rap themselves. Jason Aldean rapped the verses on “Dirt Road Anthem”, a song that first belonged to Colt Ford.
