Into the Mainstream
Into the Mainstream
Until the mid-1980s, rap barely got played on radio or television. Within a few years it reached No. 1 on the album chart and the center of TV shows that families watched together.

Rick Rubin’s Def Jam played rap to rock audiences as well, and got it onto MTV and the album chart. Around the same time Run-DMC recorded “Walk This Way” again with Aerosmith themselves, and it became hip-hop’s first top-five hit in the US. The Beastie Boys, also on Def Jam, released the first rap album to reach No. 1. LL Cool J’s love song made it onto the radio, and so did a Salt-N-Pepa track that had been buried on a B-side.
Pop Rap
Pop rap told stories everyone had lived through. Will Smith, the Fresh Prince of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, rapped about parents who sent him off to a new school year in embarrassing clothes, and about lazy summer afternoons. He set his words clearly on the beat instead of cramming them in, so families watching TV followed every story, and he later became a star of that same television. From Delicious Vinyl in Los Angeles came Tone Lōc’s “Wild Thing”, which opens on a Van Halen riff and became the first rap single to go platinum.
