Songs Everybody Knows

Pop rap did not sample a few overlooked seconds from an obscure record. It took the most memorable part of a hit that radio had played over and over, and played it as it was.

Soul

You know a Jackson 5 record within seconds, from the bouncing bass and the bright chorus of children’s voices on top. Stevie Wonder made the string-like sound of “Pastime Paradise” on a synthesizer. More than 20 years later, rap borrowed songs like these because anyone could recognize them right away.

Funk

Every funk hit has one sound that defines it. On Rick James’ “Super Freak” it is the opening bass riff, and on Prince’s “When Doves Cry” it is the bare, skeletal sound of a track with no bass at all. Rap took that signature almost untouched. Lakeside, a band from Dayton, Ohio, sent “Fantastic Voyage” to No. 1 on the R&B chart, and in 1994 Coolio used it wholesale for a hit with the same title.

Rock / Metal

Vanilla Ice lifted the bassline of Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure”, the one that bounces on a single repeated note, and used it as it was. Run-DMC went a step further with Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” and brought the band in to record it again. The guitar riff from Foreigner’s “Hot Blooded” became the central riff of Tone Lōc’s “Funky Cold Medina”.

Recognizing the original was what drew listeners in, and for the same reason the question of payment came up more plainly here than anywhere else. Rick James sued MC Hammer over the “Super Freak” riff, and the settlement added James as a songwriter. Vanilla Ice gave Queen and Bowie songwriting credit and payment only after his hit. Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” re-sings Stevie Wonder’s “Pastime Paradise”, and Wonder is listed among its writers.
