Miles at the Window

Miles at the Window

One summer, Miles Davis threw open the windows of his New York apartment and listened to the street, and he wanted to make an album of that sound. Early in 1991 he called his friend Russell Simmons and asked him to find a young producer.

On “So What”, the opening track of “Kind of Blue”, the bass asks a short question and the horns of Miles Davis and his group answer it. Ten years later, on “Bitches Brew”, Miles brought in electric piano and guitar and stretched his improvising across a loose shape closer to rock. By “Tutu” in 1986 he was playing trumpet over tracks Marcus Miller built from synths and a drum machine, an album that drove off older jazz listeners and brought in younger ones.

For his last recordings, Miles Davis chose Easy Mo Bee, who grew up in a housing project in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Miles died within the year with only six tracks finished. Easy Mo Bee built the rest from Miles’ trumpet parts recorded in 1985 and left unreleased. Many critics received the album coldly, but it won a Grammy the following year.

Easy Mo Bee went on to lay the foundations for a new set of Brooklyn voices at Sean Combs’ Bad Boy in the mid-1990s. The label’s first two leading names were Craig Mack and the Notorious B.I.G., and he produced much of both of their debut albums.
