Where Jazz Records Went

Hip-hop producers went through their parents’ jazz records looking for a few bars that could turn quietly behind a rap. Blue Note organ, CTI electric piano and the bass lines of 1970s jazz-funk were all on that shelf.

Ronnie Foster, an organist, opens “Mystic Brew” quietly on bass and guitar chords. In Donald Byrd’s “Think Twice”, a short electric-piano figure keeps coming back. Ahmad Jamal recorded “I Love Music” with his trio in 1970, and in it is the piano passage Pete Rock would later cut for Nas.

Run-DMC の「Peter Piper」で鳴る鐘と太鼓の数秒は、ボブ・ジェームスのアルバム『Two』の「Take Me to the Mardi Gras」から来ている。

The bells and drums that ring through Run-DMC’s “Peter Piper” come from “Take Me to the Mardi Gras”, on Bob James’ album “Two”. “Nautilus”, from the album before it, “One”, turned up at the end of the 1980s under Eric B. & Rakim’s “Follow the Leader”, where Rakim’s words head out into space, and under Slick Rick’s storytelling on “Children’s Story”.

A Tribe Called Quest hunted for just a few bars of organ or electric piano. Over those quiet, circling loops, two voices toss lines back and forth with a light touch. Digable Planets took a few bars of walking upright bass and used them as they were on “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)”.

スムースの「T.R.O.Y.」

Boom bap producers cut jazz so small that you might not spot the source even with the original playing. Main Source loops a Donald Byrd electric-piano phrase over hard drums, and Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth’s “T.R.O.Y.” opens on Tom Scott’s saxophone. For Jeru the Damaja’s “Come Clean”, DJ Premier picked something that is not even a melody: a single percussion hit that sounds like a drop of water.

In mid-1990s New York, short phrases on jazz keyboards kept turning quietly behind the raps. Nas rhymes over Ahmad Jamal’s piano and over Reuben Wilson’s organ. Lonnie Liston Smith’s keys sit under Jay-Z’s “Dead Presidents”, and for Ghostface Killah’s “Daytona 500”, RZA chose Bob James’ “Nautilus”.

Change the speed of a jazz record and it can sound like something else entirely. Under Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones, Pt. II” is Herbie Hancock’s piano, slowed right down, and “Survival of the Fittest” from the same album uses “Skylark” as recorded by the Barry Harris trio with Al Cohn. On “Bucktown” by Brooklyn’s Smif-N-Wessun, “Born to Be Blue”, which Cream’s Jack Bruce cut for a jazz album, loops with a muffled sound.

The Pharcyde in Los Angeles and Souls of Mischief in Oakland both reached for the soft sound of the electric piano. Rather than pushing with hard drums, they rest their raps on keys that sway gently. Two years later the Pharcyde teamed up with Jay Dee from Detroit, who laid bossa nova by Stan Getz and Luiz Bonfá under “Runnin’”.

On his 1994 album, Chicago’s Common set his words over jazz piano and guitar, and on one song he tells the story of hip-hop as a woman and how she changed. Twenty-one years later, Compton’s Kendrick Lamar brought jazz players such as saxophonist Kamasi Washington into his sessions. On “Alright” he tells himself he will be all right over jazz horns and bouncing drums.

Even for a song addressed to his mother, 2Pac chose a soft electric-piano phrase. Records by Joe Sample and Quincy Jones had keys and bass that sound warm behind a rap.

Mary J. Blige has sung over keys from the jazz side again and again. “You Remind Me”, from her first album, comes from a song by Patrice Rushen, a pianist who played the Monterey Jazz Festival at 17. On her second, “My Life” is built on the unhurried keys and melody of Roy Ayers Ubiquity. For her third, “Share My World”, she brought in Ayers himself and sang “Searching”, a replayed version of his “Searchin’”.
