Jimmy Spicer’s debut, “Adventures of Super Rhyme”, tells one long story in rhyme, and partway through, the narrator meets Dracula. “Genius Rap” came a year later from a duo who called themselves Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde and rapped in suits and ties. Brooklyn’s Whodini timed “The Haunted House of Rock” for Halloween 1983, a good-humored track heavy on sound effects where Count Dracula and the Invisible Man both make an appearance.

Rap songs about “A Nightmare on Elm Street” kept coming in the late 1980s. The Fat Boys were asked to make the theme for the fourth film, and on “Are You Ready for Freddy” Robert Englund plays Freddy Krueger, just as he does on screen. DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince made “A Nightmare on My Street” without permission; New Line Cinema sued, and the video had to be destroyed. A year later Run-DMC put new lyrics to the “Ghostbusters” theme for the “Ghostbusters II” soundtrack.

In horrorcore, the monster or the madman is the rapper himself. Drew Holiman, a DJ at the Los Angeles station KDAY who went by Psycho, formed Insane Poetry in 1988. Kool Keith plays Dr. Octagon, a surgeon from Jupiter whose patients keep dying on the table, and he put out another album under that name in 2018. Daveed Diggs of clipping. raps in the second person, which puts the listener inside the bloody scene.
