When the Story Turns to Horror
When the Story Turns to Horror
Gangsta rap told what was happening on the street in the voice of someone who was there. Move that storytelling one step from real life toward the movies, and you have horrorcore.
Gangsta Rap
Horrorcore’s way of telling a story took shape inside gangsta rap: first person, in order, moving scene by scene. Compton’s Eazy-E made his first single from Ice Cube’s lyrics, following an ordinary day in the neighborhood from a friend’s stolen car to the moment a gun comes out; “Boyz-N-The Hood (Remix)” is the version remade for “Eazy-Duz-It”. Ice-T’s 6 a.m. police raid on “6 ‘N the Mornin’” and N.W.A’s dealer story “Dopeman” are told the same way. What they described, though, was still the real street.
Southern Hip-Hop
Houston’s Geto Boys turned the gangsta first person inward, into the narrator’s own head. What happened on the street matters less than whether the man telling it is sane, and on “Mind of a Lunatic”, whose lyrics stirred controversy, the listener sees through a madman’s eyes. Violent J of Insane Clown Posse called “Assassins” the first recorded horrorcore song, and many place the genre’s start with this group. “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” follows a sleepless man hounded by paranoia, and on “Chuckie” Bushwick Bill becomes the killer doll from “Child’s Play”.
Hardcore Hip-Hop
In mid-1990s New York, dark storytelling had become a trend. Lord Finesse, who worked on the debut of Harlem’s Big L, looked back on horrorcore as what was popular at the time. The record company said tracks like “All Black” and “Danger Zone” were too dark and asked for something brighter. “Put It On”, which became the album’s first single, filled that order: a song radio could play, with a hook that sticks.
Memphis Rap
「Hit a Muthafucka」のような新しい曲と並べて、「Late Nite Tip」や「Tear Da Club Up」など、前の2枚の曲も入れ直した。
Three 6 Mafia in Memphis laid the fear of their stories over the darkness of their muffled sound. Their first album, in 1995, ran from drugs and rituals to mass murder and devil worship. “Chapter 2: World Domination”, two years later, was their first album to circulate widely across the country, and the last built around dark beats. Next to new songs like “Hit A Muthafucka”, it brought back tracks from the first two albums, among them “Late Nite Tip”, with five members passing the mic, and “Tear da Club Up ’97”.
Horrorcore
The word horrorcore first shows up on a record in 1991, on an album by KMC. From there the storytelling grew up separately in several places. In Detroit, Insane Clown Posse, a duo in clown makeup, gathered devoted fans; “The Dead Body Man”, also used in the horror film “The Fear”, became their biggest radio hit, and “Hokus Pokus” runs on an eerie, circus-like sound. Kool Keith, as Dr. Octagon, played a killer surgeon from outer space on “Blue Flowers”. In 1999 Eminem, also from Detroit, carried this kind of story onto a big-selling album with “’97 Bonnie & Clyde”, playing a man who drives his daughter to a lake to dump his wife’s body.
