Vico C was born in New York and grew up in the Puerta de Tierra district of San Juan. In 1985 he bought blank tapes at corner stores and pharmacies, recorded his own songs on them and began selling them to friends and family.
Dancehall
DJ Playero in San Juan set out to make tapes like the ones DJ Tony Touch was making in New York. He strung Jamaican dancehall tracks together, and young Puerto Rican vocalists improvised over them in Spanish. Among the tracks on “Playero 34”, from around 1994, was “Freaks” by Vicious from Brooklyn. The rhythm Playero and the others built on had been put together in Kingston by Steely & Clevie for Gregory Peck’s “Poco Man Jam”, and Shabba Ranks spread it with “Dem Bow”.
Reggaeton
Vico C later described reggaeton as hip-hop with a Caribbean flavor. On “Playero 34”, the tape that launched him, a teenage Daddy Yankee said the word “reggaeton”, which is said to be the first time it was recorded. Ivy Queen, then a member of the Noise, sang “Como Mujer” in a minor key on her first album, and on her second single she announced that the queen had arrived.
