Chicago, Heard in Flatbush
Sheff G grew up in Flatbush, Brooklyn, and started rapping after listening to the Notorious B.I.G. and to Lil Bibby and Chief Keef from Chicago. Brooklyn drill first took shape with Chicago drill as its model.
Drill
Brooklyn teenagers were listening to kids their own age on Chicago’s South Side. On “I Don’t Like”, Chief Keef rattled off the things he couldn’t stand in short, blunt lines, and Lil Bibby traded tightly packed verses with G Herbo over a cold piano.

The Notorious B.I.G. grew up in the same Brooklyn as Sheff G. On his first album in 1994, he packed his rise from a poor childhood to success into “Juicy” and named “Big Poppa” after his own nickname. “Things Done Changed”, one of the first songs he recorded for the album, is much darker: it tells how life on his streets had changed since he was a kid, without any of the brightness aimed at radio.
Brooklyn Drill
Bobby Shmurda’s 2014 song, heard here as “Hot Boy”, and the Shmoney dance that came with it brought Brooklyn drill its first wave of attention. In 2016, 22Gz from Flatbush released “Suburban” on a beat by the London producer AXL Beats, and the following year Sheff G answered with “No Suburban”. The back-and-forth between the two spread and gave Brooklyn drill its momentum.
