ロンドンの 808 メロは、10代の終わりにノートパソコンと音楽ソフトの FL Studio を買い、2016年からビートを作り始めた。そのビートは、数年のうちにブルックリンまで届く。
In his late teens, 808Melo in London bought a laptop and the music software FL Studio, and in 2016 he started making beats. Within a few years, those beats reached Brooklyn.

808 メロの音は、輪郭のくっきりした低音と、音程を滑らせながら鳴る 808 でできている。ロンドンのヘディ・ワンや K・トラップ、スケングドと AM のいるブリクストンの 410 にビートを渡して名を上げ、2018年のはじめには、UK ドリルでいちばんのプロデューサーの一人に数えられていた。ブルックリンの若者がその音を見つけるのは、もう少しあとのことだ。
808Melo’s sound rests on clean, sharply outlined bass and 808s that slide in pitch as they ring. He made his name handing beats to Headie One and K-Trap in London and to 410, the Brixton crew of Skengdo and AM, and by early 2018 he was counted among the top producers in UK drill. Young people in Brooklyn found that sound a little later.

カナーシーで育ったポップ・スモークが初めてブースに入ったのは、2018年の終わりだった。仲間について行ったスタジオで、試しに録ってみただけの一曲。そのとき使ったのが、808 メロが YouTube のチャンネルに上げていたビートだった。ブルックリンではすでに、22Gz やシェフ・G がロンドンの作り手の音で曲を出していた。翌年の最初のミックステープは、ほとんどを二人で書き、ニューヨークとロンドンで録っている。
Pop Smoke, who grew up in Canarsie, first stepped into a vocal booth at the end of 2018, cutting a track just to try it at a studio where he had tagged along with a friend. The beat he used was one 808Melo had posted on his YouTube channel. In Brooklyn, 22Gz and Sheff G were already putting out songs on beats by London producers. The next year, Pop Smoke’s first mixtape was written mostly by him and 808Melo and recorded in New York and London.
