Three versions of one song, “Now That We Found Love”, in the order they were made. The second comes from a Jamaican band, and the third was built by a Jamaican-born rapper with Harlem’s Teddy Riley.

On the O’Jays’ 1973 album “Ship Ahoy”, Gamble and Huff set love songs like “Now That We Found Love” beside a title track about a slave ship and other socially conscious songs. “For the Love of Money”, a protest against greed, was written around a bass line by Anthony Jackson. “Put Your Hands Together” calls on people to pull together and pray for a better day.
Reggae / Dub
The Kingston band Third World mixed American soul into roots reggae on “Journey to Addis” in 1978. Their take on the O’Jays’ “Now That We Found Love” became a hit in both Britain and the United States, and “Cool Meditation” sold well in Britain after it. A year earlier, before the soul came in, “1865 (96° in the Shade)” had been straight reggae about the Morant Bay rebellion.

Teddy Riley produced “Now That We Found Love” for Heavy D & the Boyz in 1991, with Aaron Hall of Guy singing the chorus. It was built on Third World’s version rather than the O’Jays’ original. Heavy D, born in Jamaica and raised in New York State, had already worked with Riley on “We Got Our Own Thang”, and he took the rap in the bridge of Michael Jackson’s “Jam”, which Riley co-produced.
