The New Jack from Harlem
The New Jack from Harlem
In 1987 Teddy Riley was still only 20. He had grown up on bouncing funk and smooth R&B singing, with the drum machines of the neighborhood rappers all around him.
Funk
The bounce in new jack swing comes first of all from funk. Roger Troutman, who led Zapp out of Ohio, showed that funk keeps its bounce even when a band’s playing is replaced by synth bass and a talk box. On “Computer Love”, from a 1985 album, Shirley Murdock and Charlie Wilson sing alongside Roger’s talk box, and the song climbed to No. 8 on the R&B chart the following year. Teddy Riley’s beats played that same bounce again on a drum machine.
R&BR&B
Luther Vandross set a big, smooth voice over a springy bass, and that kind of full, sweet singing is where new jack swing’s vocals come from. Bobby Brown and the three members of Bell Biv DeVoe, who would all go on to sing new jack swing, started out in New Edition, a group of childhood friends from a Boston housing project. Together they had taken “Candy Girl” and “Mr. Telephone Man” to No. 1 on the R&B chart.
East Coast
Teddy Riley grew up in Harlem, and the hardness of his drum machines came from the rap around him. By about 15 he was already working in Doug E. Fresh’s circle, and he helped make Doug E. Fresh’s 1985 hit “The Show”. At 18 he produced a rap track for Kool Moe Dee. He kept making beats for rappers after forming Guy in 1987, and in 1989 he produced Big Daddy Kane’s “I Get the Job Done”.
New Jack Swing
Keith Sweat’s “I Want Her”, which Riley worked on, became a hit in 1987 with a pleading voice over a hard, bouncing drum machine. Funk’s bounce is tapped out on a drum machine, a voice as powerful as gospel sings on top, and rap drops in between. In Riley’s own group, Guy, Aaron Hall was that voice. Within a few years Bobby Brown and Michael Jackson were both singing over Riley’s beats.
