Rapping on the Four-on-the-Floor

In the late 1980s, house and hip-hop used the same machines and the same records but played in different clubs. What brought the two together was a funk record from 1972.

Lyn Collins’ “Think (About It)” has a stretch partway through where nothing is left but shouts and drums. In 1986 it was included on a compilation of breaks, and the same year James Brown’s “Funky Drummer” came out on an album for the first time, 16 years after its release. A year later Eric B. & Rakim took the drums and shouts from Bobby Byrd’s “I Know You Got Soul” just as they were. By 1988 the voice from “Think” was being cut up by Chicago house and New York hip-hop alike.

House

In Chicago from around 1985, young DJs were making their own four-on-the-floor tracks on cheap Roland drum machines. The kick hits straight through under piano chords and big voices. Marshall Jefferson’s “Move Your Body” was called the anthem of house music, and a vocal record by Farley “Jackmaster” Funk made the UK chart. Todd Terry, recording in New York as Royal House, was splicing together fragments of voices from the house side.

Rap over a four-on-the-floor beat appeared in several cities at almost the same time around 1988, from Fast Eddie in Chicago to the Jungle Brothers in New York. That is why the claim to the first hip house record was fought across the ocean. When Tyree Cooper in Chicago billed his as the first hip house record, the Beatmasters in London answered that their “Rok Da House” had been on vinyl since 1986. On “Who’s In the House” they even had MC Merlin warn Tyree that they were faster.
