Martha Wash’s Voice
Martha Wash's Voice
When C+C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat” went to No. 1 in the US in 1991, Martha Wash sang its chorus, yet her name was not on the record. Her lawsuits later helped bring in rules that put singers’ names on albums and music videos. This episode follows her voice, and Jocelyn Brown’s, back through disco and R&B.
Disco
Martha Wash sang in her high school choir in San Francisco and in a gospel group. In 1976 she auditioned to sing backup for Sylvester, who liked what he heard and asked if she had a friend who could sing too, so she brought Izora Rhodes from the same group. As Two Tons O’ Fun, the pair stacked their voices behind him on “Dance (Disco Heat)” and “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)”. On their own record, “It’s Raining Men”, Wash takes the lead, moving across two octaves.
R&BR&B
次のダンスのヒット「Love's Gonna Get You」には、「I've got the power」と歌う一行があるが、ソロは続かなかった。
Jocelyn Brown started out in church choirs in Brooklyn, and from the late 1970s she sang mostly on other people’s disco records. “Somebody Else’s Guy”, which she co-wrote, reached No. 2 on the R&B chart in 1984. Her next dance hit, “Love’s Gonna Get You”, has a line where she sings “I’ve got the power”, but her solo career never took off. Around the same time Martha Wash was singing backup on Aretha Franklin’s “Freeway of Love”, next to Sylvester.
Hip House
は、最初の版の「The Power」でジョスリン・ブラウンの「I've got the power」を許しなく使い、ブラウンは訴えた。
The chorus of C+C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat” was edited together from vocals Martha Wash recorded as a demo, after being told it was for another singer. In the video, Zelma Davis mouthed the words to her voice. The first version of Snap!’s “The Power” used Jocelyn Brown’s “I’ve got the power” without permission, and Brown took legal action. Ya Kid K, who sang for the Belgian group Technotronic, appeared in a video next to the model Felly on their second single, “Get Up!”.
