The guitar on “That Lady” belongs to Ernie Isley, who learned a lot from the way Jimi Hendrix played, holding his notes long with a light distortion. On “Footsteps in the Dark” from 1977, Ernie’s guitar and Marvin’s bass repeat the same easy figure. “Between the Sheets”, from 1983, has Ronald Isley singing high over a sweet synth melody.

Ice Cube brought his own copy of “Footsteps in the Dark” into the studio, and on “It Was a Good Day” he counts off, in a relaxed voice over its soft guitar, a day in Los Angeles when nothing went wrong. Four years later Warren G built a track on the Isleys’ “Coolin’ Me Out” and had Ronald Isley himself sing on it. “Between the Sheets” is what plays underneath the Game’s “Never Can Say Goodbye” from 2008.

In New York, Sean Combs wanted the Isley Brothers’ “Between the Sheets”, and in 1994 it became the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Big Poppa”. Nashiem Myrick, who made the beat, has said his models were the West Coast sounds of Ice Cube, Snoop Doggy Dogg and above all 2Pac. Audio Two from Brooklyn had already used the song six years earlier. Jay-Z used it again in 2007 on a track with Beanie Sigel.

Jermaine Dupri, working in Atlanta in 1994, put the Isley Brothers’ “Between the Sheets” under the first single by Chicago’s Da Brat. The following year Skee-Lo borrowed it for “Superman”, from a debut album recorded in a Hollywood studio. Drake’s “A Night Off” from 2009 goes one layer deeper, built on the Jay-Z track that had sampled the song.

At 15, Aaliyah sang a 1976 Isley Brothers ballad on her 1994 debut without changing a note or a word. “Old School”, the first song she recorded for that album, sits on “Between the Sheets”, and she said she loved recording it because it had that Isley flavor. Destiny’s Child opened their debut with a track that moves from a guitar solo into the Isleys’ “Make Me Say It Again, Girl”, a song Beyoncé recorded again with the Isley Brothers 24 years later.

コンシャスの側では、題と姿勢まで受け継がれた。パブリック・エナミーのチャック・D は、アイズレー・ブラザーズの1975年の「Fight the Power」と同じ題、同じテーマを、自分たちの時代の目で埋めたかったと話している。ケンドリック・ラマーは、アイズレーの曲を使う前にロナルド・アイズレー本人を訪ねて許しをもらいに行き、それがきっかけで、二人はスタジオで一緒に仕事を始めた。

On the conscious side, the inheritance reached as far as titles and stance. Chuck D of Public Enemy has said he wanted to take the title and theme of the Isley Brothers’ 1975 “Fight the Power” and fill them in with the view from his own time. Before using an Isley song, Kendrick Lamar went to see Ronald Isley to ask his permission, and that visit led the two of them into the studio together.
