Jammer's Basement
サウンド・クラッシュでは、二つのサウンドシステムが同じ夜に曲をかけ合い、相手を「殺す」まで競う。キングストンでは1950年代から、トム・ザ・グレート・セバスチャンとデューク・リードのサウンドがぶつかっていた。グライムの MC どうしのクラッシュも、ここから来ている。
In a sound clash, two sound systems play against each other on the same night until one of them “kills” the other. Kingston had clashes from the 1950s, when Tom the Great Sebastian’s sound went up against Duke Reid’s. The clashes between grime MCs grew out of that tradition.

ロンドン南東部では、ジャー・シャカが1970年から自分のサウンドシステムを回していた。デットフォードとブリクストンで撮られた1980年の映画『Babylon』は、サウンドシステムどうしのクラッシュが山場で、そこで機材を操るのが本人役のシャカだ。主役の DJ をアスワドのブリンズリー・フォードが演じ、音楽をデニス・ボヴェルが書いた。ボヴェルは1970年代半ば、サウンドシステムを回していて無実の罪で捕まり、それが筋のもとの一つになった。
Jah Shaka ran his own sound system in south-east London from 1970. “Babylon”, a 1980 film shot in Deptford and Brixton, builds to a clash between sound systems, and the man at the controls in that scene is Shaka, playing himself. Brinsley Forde of Aswad plays the young DJ at the center of the story, and Dennis Bovell wrote the music. Part of the plot comes from Bovell’s own life: in the mid-1970s he was jailed on a false charge while running a sound system.

ロンドンのレーベル、ファッションは1985年、サクソン・スタジオ・インターナショナルのアシャー・セネターと、キングストンの DJ ジョニー・リンゴの曲を交互に並べた『JA to UK MC Clash』を出した。サクソンは1976年にルイシャムで始まり、ピーター・キングの早口の「ファスト・チャット」で名を上げたサウンドで、ティッパ・アイリーもここの MC だった。1994年には、イギリスのサウンドで初めてワールド・クラッシュに勝った。
In 1985 the London label Fashion released “JA to UK MC Clash”, alternating tracks by Asher Senator of Saxon Studio International and Johnny Ringo, a deejay from Kingston. Saxon started out in Lewisham in 1976 and made its name with Peter King’s “fast chat”, a rapid-fire style of deejaying, and Tippa Irie was one of its MCs. In 1994 Saxon became the first UK sound system to win the World Clash.

ジャマーはある日、家で友だちとふざけて言い合うところを撮らせ、見返して、MC 二人をカメラの前でぶつけることを思いつく。駆け出しのカノに、名の通ったワイリーとやる気はあるかと聞き、翌日ワイリーを家に呼ぶ。地下室で撮った一本が、2004年の DVD『Lord of the Mics』の最初のクラッシュになった。同じ年、ワイリーのデビュー・アルバムにはカノも加わっている。カノが朝のテレビに出ると、視聴者はクラッシュのことを電話で尋ねた。
Jammer was at home one day, trading playful insults with a friend, and had someone film it. Watching it back, he hit on the idea of putting two MCs against each other on camera, and asked Kano, who was still coming up, whether he would clash Wiley, already a big name. The next day Wiley came round, and what they filmed in the basement became the first clash on the 2004 DVD “Lord of the Mics”. The same year Kano appeared on Wiley’s debut album, and when Kano went on breakfast TV, viewers called in to ask about the clash.
