UK drill is usually traced to two Brixton crews: 150 from the Angell Town estate and 67 from Brixton Hill. In the early 2010s, they took their lead from a city across the ocean.

Drill

The template Brixton followed came from DJ L, the Chicago producer who made early tracks with G Herbo, heard here with Lil Bibby on “Kill Shit”. Around 2012, Chicago drill crossed the Atlantic as YouTube videos, and Brixton teenagers first absorbed the cold, flat voices of King Louie and Lil Reese, and the way Lil Durk holds his voice down over a dark piano.

グライムGrime

Without grime there would be no UK drill, says Jammer, the grime MC and producer. Drill’s 808s and quick snares come from grime, and both sit around 140 beats per minute. At that speed Dizzee Rascal, a 16-year-old from Bow, rapped over beats he made himself, and Kano squeezed words in at a smooth, rapid clip. Wiley turned the question of what to call this sound into a song title.

67 from Brixton Hill, whose name spread in 2014, worked with the producer Carns Hill to turn a sound that leaned on Chicago into something that belonged to London. The hi-hats settled into a three-three-two pattern, and the snare lands on the fourth beat of every second bar. Even the parody “Man’s Not Hot” runs on the same beat as 67 and Giggs’ “Let’s Lurk”. The look changed too: Nike tracksuits instead of the True Religion jeans and Timberlands of Chicago, because, as Skengdo put it, not everyone can afford the brands; he and AM rap over the London beat on “Jump That Fence”. On “Body”, Russ Millions and Tion Wayne ride a sliding 808 and a hook that keeps coming back.
