Giggs of Peckham
Giggs of Peckham
UK drill took the style of Chicago drill and mixed it with road rap, the British gangsta rap of south London. Road rap broke through with the rise of Giggs from Peckham, and UK drill is sometimes counted as a branch of it.
Dancehall
As a teenager in Peckham, Giggs was a DJ playing reggae, ragga and dancehall records. In ragga, Shabba Ranks delivers “Dem Bow” in a deep, heavy voice, and Super Cat toasts “Ghetto Red Hot” at speed, in a sing-song flow. On “Who Am I”, Beenie Man taunts over an electronic riddim. Giggs also ran his own pirate radio station, Spare No One FM, and the label he later founded is called SN1, for Spare No 1.
Gangsta Rap
Dr. Dre produced N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton” with DJ Yella and others, and years later he recorded seven tracks with 50 Cent in five days, starting with “In da Club”. In 2007 Giggs borrowed the beat Dre had made for Stat Quo’s “Here We Go” and rapped “Talkin the Hardest” over it. Road rap sounds closer to American gangsta rap than to grime, which grew out of sound-system culture.
UKドリルUK Drill
Digga D’s group 1011 was put under an order in 2018, the year before “No Diet”, that banned its members from making music without police permission. The Metropolitan Police had already moved against Giggs, writing to XL in 2009 to advise the label not to sign him. Headie One had his concert at the Barbican Centre shut down by police the year before “18HUNNA” with Dave. In 2024 he named a song “Form 696”, after the risk-assessment form police also used to cancel drill shows.
