ロックのレコードから借りられたのは、ドラムだけではない。ギターのリフも、ピアノの短い繰り返しも、歌の一節も使われた。ヒップホップは、ジャンルの外の棚にあるロックのヒット曲も、平気で自分の曲にした。
Drums were not the only thing hip-hop took from rock records. Guitar riffs, short piano figures and lines of singing were used too, and hip-hop had no qualms about turning rock hits from shelves outside its own genre into its own songs.

Eric Clapton’s “I Shot the Sheriff”, his version of a Bob Marley song, went to No. 1 in the US in 1974. On Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” from 1972, Herbie Flowers layered upright and electric bass. The guitar solo on Steely Dan’s “Peg” went to Jay Graydon after seven top session guitarists had tried it.

Golden-age beats drew on rock hits as well as funk. On EPMD’s “Strictly Business”, the guitar riff from Eric Clapton’s “I Shot the Sheriff” circles at an easy pace. Rick Rubin brought the guitar from the Knack’s “My Sharona” into Run-DMC’s “It’s Tricky”, and the Knack later sued. Big Daddy Kane used the drums from Billy Squier’s “The Big Beat” on “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’”.

A Tribe Called Quest’s “Can I Kick It?” opens on the four-note bassline of Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side”. De La Soul built “Eye Know” from Steely Dan’s “Peg”. The young producers digging outside their own genre reached for rock classics as well. In the Pharcyde’s “Passin’ Me By”, a backwards sound from Jimi Hendrix’s “Are You Experienced?” runs through the mix.

The closer a song aimed at the middle of the charts, the more it used a rock line everyone knew as the way in. Tone Lōc’s “Wild Thing” opens on a Van Halen guitar. Vanilla Ice looped a bassline by Queen and David Bowie and got rap’s first No. 1 in the US. Puff Daddy’s song for the late Notorious B.I.G. sits on the melody of the Police’s “Every Breath You Take”, recognizable within its first few seconds.

Out West, rock piano riffs became the core of laid-back beats. 2Pac’s “California Love” sits on a short piano figure from Joe Cocker, and “Changes” on one from Bruce Hornsby. More than a decade later in Compton, Kendrick Lamar’s “Money Trees” gives the same job to guitar and organ from the dream-pop band Beach House.

London’s Dizzee Rascal put records from the rock side under his high, rapid delivery more than once. On “Fix Up, Look Sharp”, his packed lines race over the heavy drums of Billy Squier’s “The Big Beat”. “Dream” is built on “Happy Talk”, a song from a musical that the Damned’s Captain Sensible took to No. 1 in the UK. For “Sirens” he used a track by the nu metal band Korn.

Under Juice WRLD’s “Lucid Dreams”, a quiet guitar from a 1993 Sting song repeats. Lil Peep made songs by emo and rock bands into material for his beats. The title track of his 2016 mixtape “crybaby” was built from a Brand New song, and “yesterday” uses Oasis’ “Wonderwall”. Both reached streaming services only after Lil Peep’s death, once the samples had been cleared again.

Rock records even supplied a country sound. The banjo on Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” comes from a Nine Inch Nails track. Kid Rock’s “Cowboy”, called the first country rap song, has a piano solo that follows the Doors’ “L.A. Woman”. On “All Summer Long” in 2008 he laid songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Warren Zevon over each other and reached the country radio top 10 for the first time.
