Borrowing Rock Songs
Borrowing Rock Songs
Hip-hop took material from rock records as well. It started with the drum breaks, but before long guitar riffs and even lines of singing were sitting at the center of the beat.

On the Doors’ “Five to One” from 1968, heavy guitar and drums repeat the same slow figure. Aerosmith’s “Dream On” climbs gradually until the singing turns into a scream. In King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man”, saxophone and distorted guitar play one heavy riff, broken up by Greg Lake’s voice processed until it cracks. Jay-Z, Eminem and Kanye West would each later put one of these songs into a beat of their own.

Massive Attack’s 3D began preparing “Mezzanine”, released in 1998, with the post-punk records he had loved as a teenager. He built demos from Wire and Gang of Four, and the finished album has several rock records buried inside it. The Velvet Underground sit under “Risingson”, “Man Next Door” draws on the Cure, and “Black Milk” used a Manfred Mann’s Earth Band track without permission and drew a lawsuit.

Around Jay-Z, rock records went in at the very bottom of hard rap, borrowed for the weight of the whole song rather than a few bars of break. On “Takeover”, Kanye West built the track on the Doors’ heavy guitar and drums, and on “99 Problems”, Rick Rubin brought in Billy Squier’s drums and guitar. A decade later, under “No Church in the Wild”, which Jay-Z and Kanye released together, is a guitar taken from a track by Phil Manzanera, Roxy Music’s guitarist.

On “Sing for the Moment”, Eminem took Aerosmith’s ballad “Dream On” from its very first notes and made it his own song. He kept the chorus in Steven Tyler’s voice and let Joe Perry’s guitar solo play at the end. Back in 1986, Run-DMC had re-recorded “Walk This Way” in the studio with Aerosmith themselves. In 2004 Linkin Park and Jay-Z laid “Numb” and “Encore” over each other, with Jay-Z recording his verses again between Linkin Park’s singing.

Kanye West’s “Champion” cuts out a sung line from Steely Dan. On “Power”, King Crimson’s distorted scream breaks into the middle of the beat. The guitar on “Gorgeous” comes from an instrumental version of the Turtles’ 1968 song “You Showed Me”, and Kid Cudi’s chorus follows the melody of that original.
