Sad Boys
Sad Boys
In Stockholm, Yung Lean, Yung Gud and Yung Sherman called themselves Sad Boys, recorded in a makeshift studio in Yung Lean’s basement and posted the songs to SoundCloud and Tumblr. That sound later carried as far as the pluggnB of young rappers in Louisiana.
R&BR&B
Yung Lean says he was seventeen when he recorded backing vocals for “Self Control” and “Godspeed” in Frank Ocean’s apartment in London. Both songs ended up on “Blonde”, which Ocean released in 2016. The album opens with its lead single, “Nikes”, and its rhythms are languid and sparse. Ocean changes the speed of his own voice and runs it through Auto-Tune, so that he sings in two distinct voices.

Yung Lean’s “Ginseng Strip 2002” started as a sound check, a recording to see whether the microphone worked. Yung Gud built the beat from “Loop 61”, a short loop by the Japanese beatmaker De De Mouse, slowing it down and adding trap instruments, and finished it in five to ten minutes. “Unknown Memory”, Yung Lean’s first album, followed a year later, and on “Yoshi City” and on “Ghosttown” with Travis Scott, Auto-Tuned raps ride over dreamy synth lines.
BPlugg / PluggnB
二人は「Way To Gooo!」
Autumn! from Lafayette, Louisiana, met Summrs from the same town online, and it was Summrs who got him to start rapping. Summrs raps through Auto-Tune, and his voice leans heavily toward R&B. The two rap side by side on “Way To Gooo!”, and together they brought the sound of Yung Lean’s Sad Boys into plugg and helped spread pluggnB. Autumn! is said to have made “Nina!” as filler for one of his albums, and in mid-2019 it took off on TikTok.
