The Room Next to Jungle
In early-1990s London, the second room at jungle events played American house and garage. DJs favored the dub versions on the 12-inches, with most of the vocals stripped out, and chopped what was left of the voices on samplers.

The name garage comes from the Paradise Garage, the New York club where Larry Levan played. Its sound put gospel-like piano and women’s voices up front, and “Don’t Make Me Wait” by Levan’s own group, the Peech Boys, is counted among its beginnings. Hardrive’s “Deep Inside” was one of the records that drew London crowds away from harder sounds toward garage. In New Jersey, Todd Edwards cut garage vocals apart phrase by phrase and rearranged them like an instrument, and his “Saved My Life” became a hit in British clubs. That way of treating the voice went on to shape UK garage.

As jungle grew rougher and faster, the people who came to dance, women especially, moved to the softer room at 130 beats per minute, where there was singing. Garage parties ran on Sunday nights and became known as the Sunday scene. Speed garage began when DJ EZ played Todd Edwards’ “The Praise (God In His Hand)” at 130 BPM. British producers then started making their own tracks and called the sound UK garage: Shanks & Bigfoot’s “Sweet Like Chocolate” gave it its first UK No. 1, and Artful Dodger set Craig David’s voice over the two-step bounce of “Re-Rewind”.
