The Stolen Record

Jesse Saunders grew up on Chicago’s South Side, discovered Frankie Knuckles’ music at 16, and by 1982 had opened his own club, the Playground. As a DJ, his specialty was looping the parts of a record where only the drums or the bass play.

Disco

Disco was what played in Chicago’s clubs. Frankie Knuckles, who had moved from New York, mixed Philadelphia soul with European disco. Records cut by more than 30 players, like MFSB’s “Love Is the Message”, shared the floor with synth-built disco: Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”, much of its rhythm programmed by Giorgio Moroder on a Moog, and “Supernature” by Cerrone from France. Jesse Saunders’ signature record was a bootleg megamix that carries the bassline of Lipps Inc.’s “Funkytown”, and one day it was stolen from his collection.

House

To replace the stolen record, Saunders made his own in 1984 with his friend Vince Lawrence, using a Roland TR-808 for the drums and a Roland TB-303 for the bass, with a Korg synth on top. He gave it the same title, “On & On”, and it is counted among the first house records ever sold; the follow-up, “Funk U Up”, was the first house record to enter a Billboard chart. Chicago’s DJs began making house the same way, on machines they could afford. Marshall Jefferson set the piano bouncing on “Move Your Body”, and Phuture turned the knobs of a secondhand TB-303 to make the bass bend and squelch on “Acid Tracks”.
