In mid-1980s Chicago, the Saturday night mix show on WBMX had become the most listened-to radio show in town. Two of the DJs who played on it, Farley “Jackmaster” Funk and Steve “Silk” Hurley, shared an apartment.
ソウルSoul
アイザック・ヘイズは、スタックスで「Soul Man」を共作したソウルの作り手で、自分のレコードでは人の曲を長く引き延ばした。バート・バカラックの3分の歌「Walk On By」は、12分になっている。借金を抱えてスタックスを離れたヘイズは、1975年、自分のレーベルから出した『Chocolate Chip』の表題曲で、ディスコに踏み込む。同じアルバムの「I Can't Turn Around」は、シカゴのウェアハウスで長くかけられた。
Isaac Hayes co-wrote “Soul Man” at Stax, and on his own records he stretched other people’s songs out to great length. Burt Bacharach’s three-minute “Walk On By” runs 12 minutes in his hands. Deep in debt, Hayes left Stax, and in 1975 he stepped into disco with the title track of “Chocolate Chip”, the first album on his own label. “I Can’t Turn Around”, from the same album, was played at the Warehouse in Chicago for years.

スティーヴ・"シルク"・ハーリーが J.M. シルクの名でハウスにした「I Can't Turn Around」は、1986年に全米のダンス・チャートで1位になった。同居するファーリー・"ジャックマスター"・ファンクはその伴奏の一部を借り、詞を変えて、ダリル・パンディの歌で「Love Can't Turn Around」を出す。イギリスのチャートに入った最初のハウスだった。盗作だと言ったハーリーは、1987年1月、「Jack Your Body」でハウス初のイギリスの1位を取った。
Steve “Silk” Hurley remade “I Can’t Turn Around” as house under the name J.M. Silk, and in 1986 it went to No. 1 on the US dance chart. His roommate Farley “Jackmaster” Funk borrowed part of that arrangement, changed the words and put out “Love Can’t Turn Around” with Darryl Pandy, a church choir singer, on vocals. It became the first house record to enter the UK singles chart. Hurley called it theft, and in January 1987 his own “Jack Your Body” became the first house record to reach No. 1 in the UK.
