Two New Yorkers

Two New Yorkers

Arcángel was born in New York to Dominican parents and moved to Puerto Rico at three months old. His mother had been in Las Chicas del Can, an all-female merengue group popular in the 1980s. De La Ghetto was born in the Bronx and, separated from his mother at around eight, grew up with his grandmother in San Juan.

Reggaeton

Rock was what Arcángel really loved, Puerto Rico’s Draco Rosa above all, but he says reggaeton was easier to sing. The duo he formed with De La Ghetto in 2004 rose through the heart of reggaeton, far enough to be called onto a Luny Tunes compilation for “Mi Fanática”. Going solo, De La Ghetto joined Tito El Bambino on the remix of “Siente El Boom”, and Arcángel’s “Pa’ Que La Pases Bien” leaked online and still got heavy play on Latin radio in the US. These two would later be the ones to bring in trap.

Latin Trap

De La Ghetto says he was already doing trap around 2005 or 2006, and people around him thought he was crazy. Ozuna points to “El Pistolón”, which the two recorded with friends in 2007, as the starting point. The sound took close to ten years to leave the island, and Ozuna and Anuel AA say it went abroad with “La Ocasión”, the song they made with the pair. By then singers from the dembow world were rapping and singing over slow, heavy beats, and in 2018 “I Like It”, with Bad Bunny on it, became the first Latin trap song to reach No. 1 in the US.
