A Beat from Atlanta
In 2006 E-40 of Vallejo released “Tell Me When to Go” on a beat by Lil Jon from Atlanta. With that song, hyphy, until then a chant on Bay Area streets, spread beyond the Bay.

Lil Jon moved from DJing in Atlanta clubs to making records. He produced the Ying Yang Twins’ “Salt Shaker”, and in 2004 he made Usher’s “Yeah!”, which held No. 1 in the US for 12 straight weeks. His ties to the Bay went back further: on “Bia’ Bia’”, from his 2001 album, he brought in Too Short from Oakland. Bay Area rappers would start asking him for beats two years after “Yeah!”.
Hyphy
「Tell Me When to Go」に加わったのは、オークランドのキーク・ダ・スニーク。
Keak da Sneak of Oakland, the man who coined the word “hyphy”, joins E-40 on “Tell Me When to Go”. The same year Too Short, the elder statesman of Bay Area rap, released “Blow the Whistle” with Lil Jon, a shrill whistle running through the middle of the beat. E-40 was also brought in on “Snap Yo Fingers”, a track Lil Jon built on a snap beat.
