Special Requests

In 1980 Too Short moved with his family from Los Angeles to Oakland. The boy who played drums in his high school band would go on to make songs for one listener at a time, whoever asked.

West Coast

Bay Area rap did not wait for record companies. Too Short recorded made-to-order songs onto cassettes one by one for the people who asked, and later sold albums out of the trunk of his car. In Vallejo, E-40 sold the songs he cut with his siblings from the back of a car, and started a label of his own. From “Life Is...Too Short” on, Too Short replayed funk riffs instead of sampling them, and “The Ghetto” rests on a replayed version of Donny Hathaway’s song of the same name.

Hyphy

Small local labels raised hyphy. Mac Dre of Vallejo recorded an album over the phone from prison, and after his release he set up his own label, giving local rappers a place to put out records. Keak da Sneak of Oakland coined the word “hyphy” while still in his teens, and later named a song “Super Hyphy”. The word would not reach beyond the Bay until 2006.
