Basement Parties
Basement Parties
Lil Jon grew up in southwest Atlanta and taught himself to DJ at 15. His strict parents let him throw parties in the basement, figuring that was better than having him out making noise somewhere else.
Miami Bass
Lil Jon became the resident DJ at Phoenix, a club in Atlanta. When Jermaine Dupri created a talent-scouting role at his label So So Def, he picked Lil Jon because he was the one who was in the clubs. His first job was a compilation of Atlanta bass, the local sound that grew out of Miami bass, and it sold more than 500,000 copies. Playa Poncho and Raheem the Dream put Atlanta’s nickname “A-Town” and the label’s own name into their titles, and “My Boo” by Ghost Town DJ’s came back to the charts twenty years later on the back of a dance video.
クランクCrunk
The network Lil Jon built as a DJ shows up directly on his group’s records. He formed the East Side Boyz with Big Sam and Lil Bo in 1995, and their first single, “Who U Wit”, is said to be the song that brought “crunk” into hip-hop. Their 2001 album “Put Yo Hood Up” gathers guests from Atlanta, Memphis and Oakland. On “Bia’ Bia’”, Atlanta’s Ludacris stands beside Oakland’s Too Short, and on “Move Bitch” Three 6 Mafia and Gangsta Boo come in from Memphis, while “Go Shawty Go” stays at home with Kilo Ali of Atlanta.
