Poetry on the Beat
Jazz rap voices do not shout. They lay words over the bass the way you would talk to someone or read a poem aloud, and that way of speaking has forerunners older than rap.

The Last Poets formed in a Harlem park on May 19, 1968, Malcolm X’s birthday. On their first album in 1970, three of them recite poems with one percussionist added. The same year Gil Scott-Heron recited “Whitey on the Moon” on his first album with only congas behind him, a poem about the bill for his sister’s rat bite on the day men landed on the moon. The next year he re-recorded “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”, written as an answer to the Last Poets, with a jazz band behind him.

The three members of Digable Planets took the names of insects and set their words on soft basslines with bebop slang and the delivery of the Beat poets. On A Tribe Called Quest’s “Jazz (We’ve Got)”, Q-Tip talks in an easy voice and at the end calls out the name of Pete Rock, who made the original beat. The Roots from Philadelphia went further, dropping samples altogether and playing as a live band.
