The Blue Note Shelf
In the early 1990s, young producers in New York and London dug through the jazz records of their parents’ generation. Before long, the musicians who had made those records were being called in to play on hip-hop sessions.
Jazz
What got cut out was rarely the showpiece solo; it was the part behind it, where a bass or piano keeps turning the same figure. Butterfly of Digable Planets says they simply used whatever records were at hand, and most of them were his father’s jazz. They set the upright bass of Art Blakey’s “Stretching” walking under an entire song. The piano riff of Herbie Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island” and the quiet opening of Ronnie Foster’s “Mystic Brew” are bars of the same kind.
Jazz Rap
Jazz musicians who had been sampled now joined rap sessions and played live. Ron Carter, who had been in Miles Davis’ band, plays upright bass on A Tribe Called Quest’s “Verses from the Abstract”, and on Guru’s “Loungin’” the trumpet is not a sample but Donald Byrd himself. The “Ladies and gentlemen” that opens Us3’s “Cantaloop” comes from a 1954 live recording at Birdland.
