A Tape from Detroit
In 1994 Amp Fiddler of Detroit, playing keyboards for Funkadelic on the Lollapalooza tour, met Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, who was on the same bill. Fiddler introduced him to a young local producer, Jay Dee, later known as J Dilla, and Jay Dee handed Q-Tip a demo tape by his group, Slum Village.

A Tribe Called Quest’s “Electric Relaxation”, from 1993, keeps the opening of Ronnie Foster’s “Mystic Brew” turning while Q-Tip and Phife trade lines lightly over it. The three members of Slum Village, who grew up together in Conant Gardens in Detroit, opened for Tribe on the group’s last tour in 1998. Q-Tip joined them on their second album in 2000, and they were seen as the act to carry on after the departing Tribe.

Jay Dee formed the production trio the Ummah with Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and made tracks for other groups without putting his name up front. He produced seven songs on the second album by the Pharcyde, from Los Angeles. De La Soul’s “Stakes Is High”, a run of complaints about the hip-hop of the day, was among his first major jobs as well.
Instrumental / Lo-Fi Hip-Hop
J Dilla’s health broke down after a 2002 tour, and he kept making beats while in and out of the hospital. “Donuts”, released on his 32nd birthday, is an album with no rap on it, and the end of its last track runs into the start of the first, so the record can play in a loop. He died three days later. Today he is named, along with Nujabes from Japan, as one of the sources of lo-fi hip-hop.
