Mick Jones’s Boombox

Mick Jones's Boombox

Mick Jones of the Clash fell so hard for rap that he started carrying a boombox everywhere and got the nickname “Whack Attack”. Early rap rock had more in common with hardcore punk and post-punk than with metal.

When the Clash came to America, Mick Jones stumbled on a record shop in Brooklyn that stocked the Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. In 1981 Flash and the Furious Five opened for the Clash and went down badly with a crowd that wasn’t used to rap. In February of that year, Funky 4 + 1 performed “That’s the Joint” on “Saturday Night Live”, with Blondie’s Debbie Harry hosting.

「Lightning Strikes (Not Once But Twice)」の歌詞も、同じようにその場で書かれた。

Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie went to a rap event in the Bronx in 1978, taken there by Fab 5 Freddy, and the rap section of “Rapture” name-checks Freddy and Flash. The Clash cut “The Magnificent Seven” in New York in April 1980 over a looping funk bassline, with Joe Strummer writing the words on the spot. He wrote “Lightning Strikes (Not Once But Twice)” the same way.

Urban Dance Squad, from the Netherlands, were a rock band with a rapper and a turntable DJ, and “Deeper Shade of Soul” was a hit in America too. The Beastie Boys, who had started out in hardcore punk, took their cue from them and played their own instruments again on “Check Your Head” in 1992. “So What’cha Want” made both the rap and modern rock charts, and “Time for Livin’” is a return to hardcore punk.
