After the Mosh Pit
After the Mosh Pit
The SoundCloud generation of the 2010s did not form rock bands. Working on computers in their bedrooms, they crammed screaming and guitar into tracks distorted to the point of breaking up.

Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name”, from 1992, repeats a heavy riff and ends by shouting one line of refusal over and over. Seven years later, Limp Bizkit’s “Break Stuff” spat out anger as it came over an even simpler riff, and the album it came from sold more than 7 million copies. On Linkin Park’s “One Step Closer” a year after that, a screamed chorus rides on bouncing drums.
SoundCloud Rap / Emo Rap
The screaming and distortion of nu metal were picked up again by young rappers who had no band. XXXTentacion distorted whole tracks until they broke up, and Ghostemane makes no secret of what he took from nu metal and Slipknot. Trap that took in metal, hardcore punk and nu metal later got a name of its own, trap metal. Lil Peep, from the same generation, sang almost in a whisper over soft guitar, and on his first album moved into pop punk and rap rock.
Rage
As a word, rage first meant a crowd going wild at a show, and Trippie Redd’s “Miss the Rage” mourns the shows that disappeared. The music runs on harsh synths and blown-out 808s rather than guitars, with Playboi Carti all but shouting over them on “Stop Breathing”. The aim is the same as at a rap rock show: a sound built to send the crowd crashing into each other. Ken Carson, signed to Carti’s label, Opium, claims rock outright with the title “Rock N Roll”.
