In 1986 the rapper Andre Harrell started Uptown Records in New York. The label put out rap and R&B side by side, and by 1993 it was leading the field in both.

Uptown was started by a rapper, but it grew big on its singers. Teddy Riley’s group Guy topped the R&B albums chart with its debut and spread the bounce of new jack swing, Aaron Hall’s gospel-strong voice out front. Al B. Sure! made his debut on Uptown as well. Heavy D, the first rapper the label signed, sold in large numbers here too, and on “Now That We Found Love” Riley turned an O’Jays song into a dance track with Hall singing.

Two pairs of brothers who had sung in gospel family groups in Charlotte, North Carolina, the future Jodeci, drove to New York with a demo tape. They found Uptown’s address in the phone book, turned up without an appointment and sang for Harrell. Their look ran opposite to the neatly dressed R&B groups of the day: baseball caps and Timberland boots. Mr. Dalvin came up with it, and Sean Combs, then the intern assigned to them, got it past Harrell.
