Around 2010, the young rappers who started drill on Chicago’s South Side took their biggest influence from Atlanta, from Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame.

Young Chop names three forerunners of drill: Shawty Redd and Zaytoven, who worked in Atlanta, and the Memphis-born Drumma Boy. Their sound was half Memphis and half Atlanta, with buzzing synths and thick bass punched in beneath them. What mattered most to drill, though, were the songs of Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame, above all the heavy beats Lex Luger made for Waka.
Drill
Young Chop grew up on the South Side and started making beats at 11 with help from a cousin. He met Chief Keef on Facebook, and Keef’s mixtape “Back from the Dead” became the first one he worked on. The “Young Chop on the beat” that opens “I Don’t Like” is the voice of his four-year-old cousin, and Lil Reese, who joins Keef on that track, keeps the same flat delivery on his own “Us”. On “Love Sosa”, a high synth rings like a bell over the hi-hats.
