Drake, from Toronto, has followed drill since it first drew attention in Chicago. When the sound took hold in London and then in Brooklyn, he made songs with rappers and producers in each city.

Drake once wrote on Twitter that he had played Chief Keef’s “Love Sosa” 130 times in three days. In November 2012 he and Rick Ross joined a remix of Lil Reese’s “Us”. G Herbo, then still Lil Herb, and Lil Bibby first got noticed with “Kill Shit”, and their audience grew when Drake called them “the future”.

In 2018 Drake freestyled over a UK drill beat, and he named “Call Me Loose”, the mixtape by Loski from Kennington, among the inspirations for his album “Scorpion” that year. On “War”, released at the end of 2019, he raps a single verse with no hook in a British accent over a beat by the London producer AXL Beats. Teaming up with Headie One on “Only You Freestyle” in 2020, he called Headie the best drill artist in the world.

On “Demons”, Drake brings in two New York drill rappers, Fivio Foreign and Sosa Geek, while he himself raps in a London accent and British street slang. Fivio had started to make his name the year before with “Big Drip”, and “Demons” put him on the US charts for the first time. AXL Beats, the producer behind “War”, is known for bringing UK drill beats to Brooklyn, and he also made the beat for 22Gz’s “Suburban”, which caught on in 2016.
