Beauty Turned Cold

Beauty Turned Cold

Underneath the darkest records of 1990s New York lie records that were once sweet and beautiful. Producers slowed them down and dirtied them up until they turned cold.

Soul

The cold loops started out as sweet soul. The Charmels sing that all is fine as long as they have you, and Gladys Knight looks back on days gone by. Wendy Rene’s “After Laughter (Comes Tears)”, released on Stax in Memphis, is about the tears that follow the laughter. Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA cut just a few seconds from records like these, and the Wendy Rene song sits under “Tearz”, one of the first tracks the group recorded.

Jazz

Quiet jazz piano and film scores turned into cold loops in Mobb Deep’s hands. On “Shook Ones, Pt. II”, Herbie Hancock’s piano is slowed so far that it starts to waver, and the siren-like sound comes from a Quincy Jones film score. A track that Cream’s bassist Jack Bruce put on a jazz album later became the source of “Bucktown”.

RZA’s equipment was not good, so Wu-Tang Clan’s drums came out low and heavy rather than clean, and the samples picked up an eerie echo. Over those loops on “C.R.E.A.M.” and “Can It Be All So Simple”, Raekwon and the others talk plainly about money and about the past. Mobb Deep keep their two voices low on “Survival of the Fittest”, and “Shook Ones, Pt. II” walks the line between the tough and the scared.
