A Hard Lineage
Strip away the decoration and throw the words out in a strong voice over a hard beat. That attitude took shape gradually in 1980s New York.
East Coast
Run-DMC from Queens are named as the first group of what came to be called hardcore hip-hop. On “It’s Like That”, their first single in 1983, the two rappers shrug over a hard drum machine that this is just how the world is. For the second single, “Hard Times”, they cut a funk-leaning Kurtis Blow song down to a stumbling drum machine, one repeated keyboard stab and their voices. A year later “Rock Box” carried distorted rock guitar.
Golden Age
By the end of the 1980s, confrontation itself had become a stance a rapper could take. Public Enemy set Chuck D over a wall of sound that never lets up, and had him shout as if giving a speech. Boogie Down Productions, from the South Bronx, described guns and street violence plainly, and answered MC Shan of Queens on record with a claim that it all started in the South Bronx.
Hardcore Hip-Hop
In a hardcore record, the force of the voice pulls the song along, not the melody. Onyx from Queens shout over hard drums, and M.O.P., a duo from Brownsville in Brooklyn, bark at each other like they are in an argument. DMX from Yonkers growls in a hoarse voice.
